Bamboo
Cabinetworks
Bamboo is not a wood in the true sense, but rather a type of grass. In the wild it exudes a raw and natural beauty with its knotted joints, smooth glossy rounded surfaces and intense green leaves. The use of Bamboo as an architectural and interior medium evokes a whispering essence of the East into any contemporary style.

Bamboo furniture board is made from solid bamboo strips laminated together into sheet form. It offers a modern ecofriendly alternative to solid wood and traditional veneers. Bamboo is a sustainable and renewable resource, fast growing, ecologically friendly, and harder and more durable than most common European hardwoods.

See below for the different types of bamboo available from Cabinetworks in it’s raw sheet form, finished, or transformed into a beautiful piece of furniture.

Solid bamboo

Bamboo terminology can often be misleading, all the bamboo used at Cabinetworks is in fact ‘solid’. Nevertheless, the term ‘solid bamboo’ refers to the type of furniture board made by laminating strips of bamboo, and then putting the resultant boards through a heating and drying process. The end product has a distinct look, easily recognisable for it’s striking linear feel. Solid bamboo is undoubtedly the most contemporary and cleanest looking of all the woods.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Bamboo is a contributing finish under the 6.0 section of the US Green Building councils LEED materials and resource point system.

Strand woven bamboo

Once again the terminology here can be misleading, strand woven bamboo is not actually a woven material at all, but rather a highly compressed material. The process followed involves the breaking down of the strips of bamboo taken from the bamboo shoot, which is then placed into a standard sized mould where it is compressed under dramtically large amounts of pressure. This is then followed by heating a drying process, eventually resulting in a ‘sleeper’ of extraordinarily strong and stable wood. Strand woven bamboo has a completely unique and very natural ‘wood’ look, it is often compared to other hardwoods for it’s aesthetic appeal, though in strength it far out-performs them all.
